Drag Racing- What Is Footbraking?

Just wondering what “footbraking” is? This guy at a race said he wanted 4 car lengths, both stages of nitrous, and he wanted the other guy to “footbrake.” Thanks in advance.

The other answers are a little off the mark but close. Some cars with drag racing specific transmissions use a transmission brake to hold the car in place just before the start. This allows the car to leave the line much harder and faster creating a faster time. I believe it is only for automatic transmission drag cars. Footbraking is where the driver chooses not to use the transbrake and instead just keeps his foot on the brake pedal and revs the gas pedal with the other foot and lets off the brake to get moving. Or, the other driver may be just holding on the brake pedal and moving his foot to the gas to start like you would on a conventional automatic transmission road car.

footbraking is when you use the brake pedal with your foot, and not the emergency brake with your hand

Hold your foot on the brake and starting slowly and then increasing the amount of gas pedal pressure applied by your foot makes the rear wheels start frying / smoking. This is how ya heat up the tires for a drag race
