Drag Racing… Please Help……?
sorry for repeating but i added more info. i am getting into the racing business and want my 1974 (1971 corolla engine)corolla to go faster. i have slicks and my car does a wheelie off the start but does not go fast. also i have a shift light with a new rpm gauge but it jumps up and down between rpms and the light turns on because it is on 8000 but i am really only on 6000. why does it do that. i have webers on it but it does not perform well. i have taken all the weight i can out(do not want to cut rare car) but i am stuck in the 14s with it stock. i am putting in nos but am not using it until i reach the 13s. i need something between $1000 and $3000 that will give it a good change.

if your car is the yellow 2 door wagon, its actually doing a wheelie. i had to see it to believe it.
anyways, you can definitely strip more weight out of the car by using fiberglass panels(ex. hood, rear hatch, front fenders). don’t worry, you aren’t cutting up the car, because you can put all the sheet metal back on the car to make it original again.
if this were my car, i would start with the suspension.
if the car has a unibody design, start with a set of subframe connectors. these aren’t expensive and they will stiffen up the car and make it launch straighter.
then get some 90/10 drag shocks for the rear and 70/30’s for the front. this will improve your weight transfer to help you get down the track quicker and straighter.
remove the front swaybar. why? removing the front swaybar makes your front suspension raise more easily during acceleration, also the sway bar weighs 10-15 lbs, so you just got lighter.
you can relocate the battery to the trunk on the right side. this improves weight transfer by putting more weight in the back of the car.
as for the engine, you said you have high compression pistons, thats great but how much of an over bore you do have? larger pistons=more displacement.
you could do a stroker kit. this will give you more displacement and more horsepower.
intakes, throttle bodies, cam shafts, headers and exhaust systems all work together. so these mods will give you more power on the cheap. the faster you can get air in and out of your engine, the more power it will make.
a turbo is one way to make your car reach the 13’s, but high compression+boost= a grenade motor. you want low compression if you want to run a turbo
nitrous is the easiest way to make power and go faster these days. just remember to use a wet kit over the dry kit because you make more power with the wet nitrous kit. this is because the liquid nitrous mixes with the liquid fuel before it is injected into the combustion chamber.
a different rear end gear will also make you faster too. most stock gearing is set up for fuel economy, not acceleration. try putting a 4.30:1(larger number=faster acceleration) gear in it from a mk3 non turbo toyota supra(stock gearing). you will definitely go faster and probably get into the mid 13’s just by changing the gearing
as for why your tach bounces. i dont know why it does this.
hope this helps you and your corolla win some drag races.

what engine are you running? T, R or A series? there are some fast toyota 4 bangers that could get you in the 13s in that (light) car. A turbo would do it too, but might be more the 3k. Otherwise, if you’re already on slicks and done weight reduction I’m not sure what you could do, short of a engine rebuild with more go fast parts.

I highly doubt it does a wheelie running 14’s. I mean seriously.

man their is so much you could do take it to a drag strip and ask people
