Drag Racing Question, How Come My Dad…?
Ok here’s the deal.
I go to a lot of drag racing events with my father. He’s 55 years old and I’m 20. I should have that advantage over him..
We own a Chevy Cobalt SS (manual).. we take turns racing it. On those occasions where I race against another car and end up losing by a bit, my dad gives it a go against the same car and he ends up WINNING!
Is there like secret techniques that my dad is using? Cuz I cant accept doing worse then a 55 year old man.

It’s called experience. Your Dad has been racing probably as long as you are old. Tom P has the other two words that are very important in racing. Concentrate more on learning right now. Your day will come when you can say “I finally beat the old man”. Racing is something that has to be learned. If you look at the average drag racer these day’s they are around your Dads age or a few years younger. Look at Ashley Force, she’s 26 yrs old but she learned from her Dad and has a way to go to tie his records. Be patient, let your Dad teach you.

Drag racing is one of the few sports where age doesn’t slow you down. All you need is practice and a good reaction time. When I get too old to be competitive on the ovals, I plan to spend more time at the drag strips all over the U.S. There are no big secrets to drag racing, but practice makes perfect. I know some guys who drag race all the time, but still cannot cut a decent light to save their butt. You could probably learn a lot from your dad.

Reaction time, man. If you’re serious about wanting to improve yours, go and find a “practice tree”. They’re little computers that you can practice your lights on. I race a dragster and I’m on that thing 24/7. And age has NOTHING to do with drag racing. I’m 17 and have been beaten by younger and older, and vice versa.

Is it heads up, or bracket racing??? If its heads up, he could be killing the tree, hitting the shift points tighter, or launching it without spinning. If its bracket racing, he could still be killing the tree, holding numbers and driving the stripe??? Need some more detail.

Two words, REACTION TIME.
If he is a tick quicker off the light, he’s got the advantage from the get go.
Keep working on it.

Comes down to experience. Not so sure there is some secret, just years of doing it. Ask him to help you get better.
