Are You Able To Drag Race In An 89 Corvette With An Auto Tranny?
I am looking to buy a 1989 Corvette with an Auto tranny. I want to know if I would be able to drag race the car OK. I am not looking to make it an everyday thing, but I would like to do it a few times. Also, I know that the 5-speeds made before 89 where known to have issues. How are the Auto transmissions in an 89 Vette? Thank you!

Yes, and it’s possible to use the shifter to limit automatic upshifting. I’ve seen specially designed shifters for drag racing in an automatic; they lock out the reverse and park gears and usually have a locking shift gate.

A lot of drag racers prefer an automatic. You lose time by having to go through the shift process. Yes, you car should be able to do it.
Have fun and do it on the track, not on the street.

It would probably be best to go with a manual specifically for drag racing. Drag racing with a manual allows you to get max RPM between shifting thus allowing you higher speed.
