Losing a cylinder means that something has happened a cylinder in the engine. Thrown a rod, broke off a valve, lost spark to the cylinder, broken spring…quite a few reasons. You can tell on ESPN HD coverage and see the cylinder that goes out as raw fuel comes out the headers from the broken cylinder.
The reason in drag racing that a car that loses a cylinder can win the race is because chances are that car has built enough of a lead to not be able to be overtaken in the last few hundred feet of the race.
That lead can be built from a quicker reaction time to the lights and running a slower ET (elapsed time) than the opponent, known as “winning on a holeshot”.
Also, a car that loses a cylinder could win if the opponent “goes up in smoke”, losing traction and having to get in and out of the throttle to make it down the track. While fighting to get traction, the wounded car could take the lead.

dropping a cylinder basically means that the car is pushing more fuel into the cylinder than can be burnt at one time. The most common class that this happens in is the injected nitro dragsters in the T/AD class because they dont have a supercharger to force air into the cylinder to aid in the burning of fuel. The blown alcohol cars do not drop cylinders as much as any nitro car because methanol burns a lot quicker than nitromethane. Any car can win with a dropped cylinder it just depends on what kind of time the guy in the other lane is turning and how quick you were off the line.

it mean that one of the cars cylinders, (the part that holds the piston, in a V12, it has 12 cylinders, in a V8 it has 8, in a straight 16 it has 16 aand so on) stops working, most cars can still work on 2 cylinders if they have to, it just lowers the amount of horsepower they have, hope this answered your question!
